Near drowning event on the Great Barrier Reef!

Check out the latest paper by members of the Geocoastal Research Group which deals with the evolution of the Great Barrier Reef over the last 125 000 years! Our research was the first to provide an accurate identification of the age of the fossil reef, that grew before the modern Great Barrier reef approximately 129-121 ka ago. Importantly, our research showed that the Great Barrier Reef almost drowned during the beginning of the last Inter-glacial period because of very rapid sea level rise, highlighting the GBR’s sensitivity to major environmental changes.
